Hi All,
If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that i have colored my hair two months ago. I had my hair dyed this beautiful burgundy red. What most of y'all don't know is that, i had a crazy allergic reaction to the dye that was used on my hair. To make matters worse, I was going out of town for a conference in a few days.
I didn't plan on getting my hair dyed when i walked into the hair salon but as a woman we, sometimes have those feelings of "I need to look younger". I really love my signature gray patch in the front of my hair but sometimes you give into the pressure Lol! I walked into my hairstylist's shop and she said, are you ready for some color? I was like, um um um, yeah lets go red. We talked about what hue of red I should get and how i didn't want to be too crazy with the color. So we settled on the perfect burgundy red.
At first when she applied the dye to my hair, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. After about 15 minutes, i had a itch on my wrist. I really didn't pay it any attention. Once I sat for a while and she rinsed the dye out of my hair, I looked in the mirror and I LOVED IT! Perfect color, not to much. I walked down the street like, Yasssss Honey You Have Arrived!
I went home and showed my husband who was like "What am I going to do with you". He really could care less about my hair because it is not down to my butt (that's another blog, cause men just love long hair). Before going to bed, i put some curling creme in my hair just to prep my curls for the next day's "mist n go".
So I woke up the next morning and the back of my head was itching alot. Ok, no big deal, maybe its just sensitive. By that afternoon, I noticed that i was scratching more and more. Fast forward 2 days later and i was full on allergic reacting to the hair dye. My face had a rash, my neck had a rash and i was starting to itch on my back. I went to the doctor and the doctor said, oh, its nothing severe so I went home. Again, i was starting to itch more. Now, i was scared. To make matter even more worse, i had received this natural hair article about the worse allergic reactions to hair dye and the results.
OMG, i ran to the doctor the next day. This time, the doctor was like "Oh, well i believe it will get better over time "Call your hairstylist and see if you can get it reversed"... I was like, what in the world is going on. Nonetheless, because my doctor cleared me to travel, i went on my trip, itching the whole way Lol! I loaded myself with Benadryl and applied Hydrocortisone topical creme. Needless to say, I had a great time on my trip and now have grown accustom to my new hair color. The doctor was right, the itching over time went away. People everywhere are like "I love your hair color, I love your hair...I be like "Thank You, but you don't know what I been through"!
5 Precautions To Take Before Dyeing Your Hair:
1.Do your research on the ingredients of your hair dye or the hair dye that your hair stylist is using. You never know!
2.Before applying a hair dye, do a skin test!!!!
3.We are a DIY Natural Hair Society but think about letting a professional dye your hair...sometimes, its the little things
4. Pay attention to yourself once you have applied the hair dye to your hair. If you notice any itchy, funny feelings, see your physician immediately. Waiting, can cause some very adverse situations.
5. Consider getting a rinse instead of a permanent color. Statics have shown that permanent hair dye reactions are more prevalent than with a temporary rinse.
Blessings!
